The short answer

Getting onto the WhatsApp Business API usually takes a few days, mostly waiting on Meta: setting up a Meta Business account, registering the number and, optionally, verifying the business. Each message template then needs Meta's review, which Meta says can take up to 24 hours.

  • Meta Business account and number registration come first.
  • Template review: up to 24 hours, per Meta.
  • New accounts start with a limit of 250 people a day outside the service window.
  • Business verification raises that limit to 2,000.

The steps

  1. A Meta Business account for your business.
  2. A WhatsApp Business account and number, registered through your provider. The number must not be on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app.
  3. Templates for anything you'll send first, such as reminders or offers. Meta reviews each one; its documentation says review can take up to 24 hours.
  4. Business verification, recommended. It raises your messaging limit.

Why it can take a few days

Most of the wait is Meta reviewing your business, number and templates. You can't speed that up, but you can avoid rejections: use your legal business name consistently, and keep templates clearly in one category.

Messaging limits at the start

New business portfolios can message 250 unique customers in a rolling 24 hours outside the customer service window. Verifying your business, or sending 2,000 good-quality messages in 30 days, can lift that to 2,000, and it keeps growing automatically with good quality. Replies to customers who messaged you first don't count against it.
