WhatsApp Business app vs API: which do you need?
The app is a free tool for a person on a phone. The API is how software, like an AI front desk, talks to customers.
The WhatsApp Business app is Meta's free app for small businesses that reply by hand from a phone. The WhatsApp Business Platform (API) is for businesses that need software to answer, automate or share chats across a team; it's paid per template message. Most API setups use a dedicated number; some providers support Meta's "coexistence" option, which keeps an app number on both, with limits.
- App: free, your existing number, a person replies.
- API: paid, a dedicated number, software and teams reply.
- Most API setups use a dedicated number; Meta's coexistence option is the exception.
- Move to the API when you can't keep up by hand.

The WhatsApp Business app
A free app from Meta. You get a business profile, a catalogue, quick replies, greeting and away messages and labels. It's used on a phone, with linked devices, by you or your staff. It suits businesses that can reply to every message themselves.
The WhatsApp Business Platform (API)
The API lets software send and receive messages for your business. You use it through a provider's app. That's how AI replies, booking, reminders, team inboxes and broadcasts at scale work. Meta charges per template message. Most businesses use a dedicated number for it; Meta also offers coexistence, through providers that support it, so a WhatsApp Business app number can be used on both.
Side by side
- Cost: app free; API = provider plan + Meta's template charges.
- Who replies: app = a person; API = software and your team.
- Automation: app = fixed greeting and away messages; API = anything your software does.
- Number: app = your current number; API = usually a dedicated number (or your app number through coexistence, where your provider supports it).
When to switch
Switch when messages arrive faster than you can answer, after hours, or across several staff. For a fuller comparison, see WAnee vs the WhatsApp Business app.
People also ask
Only through Meta's coexistence option, and only with a provider that supports it. With coexistence, broadcast lists and some app features are switched off, and API sending is capped at 20 messages a second. Otherwise the API needs a number that isn't registered on either app. WAnee uses a dedicated number.
Not if you use a provider. With WAnee, setup is guided and you don't write code.
More answers
Can I use my existing number for the WhatsApp Business API?
Usually the WhatsApp Business API needs a number that isn't registered on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, so you either use a new, dedicated number or move your current number off the app. Meta also offers coexistence, through providers that support it, which keeps a WhatsApp Business app number working on both, with some app features switched off.
Read the answer Setting upHow long does WhatsApp Business API setup take?
Getting onto the WhatsApp Business API usually takes a few days, mostly waiting on Meta: setting up a Meta Business account, registering the number and, optionally, verifying the business. Each message template then needs Meta's review, which Meta says can take up to 24 hours.
